Cicero Crime Drops To Record Lows

Gang shootings and homicides have continued to drop in Cicero, according to a recent report from the town’s police department.

Cicero Police Superintendent Jerry Chlada, Jr., said the data continues to show the effectiveness of Town President Larry Dominick’s initiatives to reduce the street gangs’ impact in the town and with our youth.

“It is great to see these numbers continue to drop, even when it looks like there is no way they can drop any further,” Chlada said. “But that does not mean we can be less vigilant. The best number will always be zero in these cases.”

Prior to Dominick’s administration, gang shootings and gang-related homicides had climbed to 65 and 14, respectively. Police records show 2015 had only six shootings and one homicide. Since taking over as Town President, Dominick has increased the police presence in the town to reduce the number of gangs and gang members, while also creating and promoting afterschool and weekend activities geared at keeping kids off the streets and out of trouble.

“I’m happy to see our efforts have been working,” Dominick said. “But I won’t be satisfied until there are no more shootings and no more homicides. We must continue to work to keep our kids on the right path for a better future.”

Chlada agreed, adding that he hopes the continued cooperation between the town’s residents and the police will result in greater success in reducing gang crime in the town.

“We couldn’t do this without the help from residents in keeping an eye out for suspicious activities,” Chlada said. “Parents, especially, are vital to make sure their kids are not starting to get involved with questionable friends.”
